Is aspartame bad for the health?
The only problem where aspartame could present a risk is when somebody suffers from phenylketonuria (PKU). This rare genetic disease causes difficulties in digesting a certain amino acid, phenylalanine. Aspartame releases this digestive component into the intestine. But according to AFSSA (French agency for the sanitary safety of food), "Even with aspartame doses that are much higher than normal exposure rates, the basic levels of phenylalanine in the blood that could cause secondary effects in a child suffering from phenylketonuria are not attained." It would thus seem that the risk is low.
