IN THEIR OWN WORDS

"To begin with, I started training in the building trade. At 16, I began working for a self-employed craftsman as a trainee plasterer, and I stayed for 25 years! When the little company closed down, I learned through a friend that the plant at Aytré was hiring people, and so I applied. I began by loading products onto pallets, then did a month's course to learn how to operate a thermo-sealing machine: a job I still do today.

The thermo-sealer is a machine that places seals onto pots that have just been filled. The operator's role is to keep the machine supplied with blisters containing the sheets of seals, change the formats and number of pots according to whether we are processing packs of 4, 6, 8 or 12 units, and of course, ensure that all is running smoothly. It involves checking that the seals are properly centred, and checking the temperature of the heating heads that fix the seals onto the pot. Then air-tightness and resistance when the seal is removed need to be verified. The operator also has to carry out vacuum controls, take temperatures, and carry out minor maintenance work on the machine. On average, a thermo-sealing machine can seal up between 13,000 and 15,000 pots per hour.

When I began this job, I was slightly afraid of working in a factory, but I quickly got used to it. Actually, being an operator is a very lively and varied job. It means adapting to the requirements of the organisation and therefore frequently changing the settings to process different types of packs. I like the good atmosphere there is in the workshop. What's more, the job enables me to live here, right next to the city and port of La Rochelle, which I love so much!"
